This church is located on old mound city of Chunian. Our administration is very thankful to Babu Latif Akhtar who granted us permission to cover Saint Mary’s Catholic Church. We are also thankful to Nasir Masih Employee of Government Graduate College Chunian who helped us to visit this beautiful church of Church.
History of The Saint Mary’s Catholic Church Chunian
Old building of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church was constructed in the year 1957. According to Urdu commemorative stone affixed on the right side of the entrance door of the church, foundation stone of the new building of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church was laid on 11th November 2014 with the hands of Reverend Father Leopolad OFM Cap.
The inauguration of the new building of the church opened on 19th August 2018 by the Arch Bishop Sabestain Fransis Shaw, Arch Dayosisi of Lahore.
The construction work of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church was done under the supervision of Rev. Father William Basharat OFM Cap (Perish Preist), Rev. Father Almas Yousaf OFM Cap (Assistant Preist) Malika Farisgaan e Perish Phoolnagar and Babu Irfan Yousaf Zavior.
The map of the church designed through Ch. Allah Ditta Khan Masih. He was the builder and contractor of the church as well. The names of the pastors who served Saint Mary’s Catholic Church from very beginning till now are Babu Naseer, Babu Pitras, Babar Sardar Shaheen, Babu Khadam, Babu Sardar, Babu Irfan Zavior(2014- Sep 2020) and Babu Latif Akhtar (Sep 2020 to till now).
The role of an Elder in a Church is of great importance. The good names of the Elders who served Saint Mary’s Catholic Church are Shoqat Khan, Ulfat Sahib, Younas Nasih, Aslam Masih, Abid Masih and Aftab Yousaf.
Brief Introduction of Babu Latif Akhtar
Babu Latif Akhtar was born on 7th April 1974 at Titlay wali Gujaranwala. The names of his father and mother are Rafiq Masih and Hameedaan Bibi. He passed his matriculation from Government High School Tatlay wali District Gujaranwala in 1992.
He passed his Bachelor in Theology from Saint Albert Catechists Training Center Khushpur Faisalabad during 1992-1995. Saint Albert Catechists Training Center Khushpur Faisalabad is a national institute for pastors training.
In Catholic church, Babu works in place of the pastor. Mr. Latif Akhtar served Saint Paul Catholic Church Narowal city as Babu from 10th January 1996 to 25th February 2006.
After this, he worked at Saint John Catholic Church Yohana Abad from 26th February 2006 to 13th June 2006.
Then, he served Saint Francis Zavior Catholic Church from 15th June 2017 to 9th January 2020. After this, he worked at Saint James Catholic Church Sialkot Cantt from 10th January 2020 to 25th September 2020.
