Introduction of Prominent Researcher Prof Shuaib Raza

Prof. Shuaib Raza is a prominent and renowned researcher and research photographer of Pakistan. He visited District Kasur two times. Firstly, he visited historical monuments of Chunian and Changa Manga on 20th July 2015 accompanied by Syed Faizan Naqvi and Shrine Expert Ahmad Hassan. Later, Prof. Shuaib Raza again visited District Kasur on 29th June 2019 and covered the historical monuments of group of temples at Mola Pur village, Marhi Fatmal Esvi, tomb of Hazrat Baba Naik Mard Sarkar, Gurudawa Mal Jee Sahib Kanganpur and Railway Station Kanganpur. Both time Ali Babar welcomed him.

Prof. Shuaib Raza is serving as Additional Director (Administration & Coordination), Media Coordinator and Public Information Officer at Ghazi University Dera Ghazi Khan. He is Ex-Head of Department, Department of Horticulture and Ex-Registrar Ghazi University, Dera Ghazi Khan. Prof. Shuaib Raza is not only an educationist but also a traveller, tourist and historian.

Educational History

Prof. Shuaib Raza was born in 1975 at Jhang. After completion of early education from Government Islamia High School Jhang and Govt. Degree College for Boys Jhang, he went to University of Agriculture, Faisalabad and earned his degree of M.Phil in Agriculture (Horticulture) in 1999. Soon after completion of degree, he joined College of Agriculture, Dera Ghazi Khan as Lecturer in the year 2000. Currently he is serving at Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at Ghazi University Dera Ghazi Khan.

Family Background

Grandparents of Prof. Shuaib Raza migrated from Jhalandhar and Gurdaspur. His maternal grandfather was an educationist. He started Bashir Girls High School Jhang in 1962 which was later nationalized in 1970s. His parents were also educationists. Father was master degree holder in Urdu from Punjab University Lahore (1966) and served as teacher in Municipal High School Vehari (presently Govt. Model High School Vehari). His father was also Chief Scout Master (Multan Division) along-with player of Lawn Tennis and Football. He was traveller and photographer by hobby. He had his own small studio at his home for developing & printing of photographs.

With tours of scouting he travelled across the Pakistan and captured various events/monuments from 1958 to 1970. Due to ill-health condition he could not continue his passion and passed away in 1975. His mother completed her education from Govt. College for Women, Karkhana Bazar Lyallpur and Lady Malegaon Training College Lahore. She served as Deputy Education Officer and then District Education Officer in district Jhang for over 20 years. Her specialization was in history. She passed away in 2009.

Work and Interests

Travelling, photography, history and education he adopted through inheritance. Soon after matriculation Shuaib Raza got fascinated by watching the photographs of various cities including Lahore, Karachi, Murree, Vehari, & Multan and other locations of Pakistan by his father, motivated him and purchased a book on “Modern Practical Photography” in March 1990. He initially bought a simple 110 camera, but very shortly replaced with a better machine, Yashica MF2, a very successful domestic camera in 1990s. He started his photographic work under guidance of senior photograohers of Jhang and Lahore, along-with guidance and clues from books. With family trips to Lahore, Faisalabad, Chiniot, Bahawalpur, Islambaad, Murree and few other cities he used the camera to capture family events, monuments and natural scenes.

Unintentionally he captured some images of deteriorating heritage in Jhang (old Temple) and Chiniot (Raikhti Fort). The series of capturing continued in other cities also. After getting admission in Faisal Abad, he upgraded camera in 1994 and purchased a used professional machine Yashica 108 from a foreigner at Nisbat Road, Lahore. During university regime, he used to travel and capture various events/scenes in Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Chiniot, Multan, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, Chakwal, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Taxila, Wah Cant, Kharian, and many other cities on study as well as recreational tours. After earning his M.Phil, he joined his job as University teacher in Dera Ghazi Khan. During his posting regarding study and recreational tours, he found chances to travel across Pakistan, especially whole Punjab, along-with few parts of Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Baluchistan.

During his visit to Lahore Museum he got interested in non-Muslim heritage and after the year 2007, he aimed to capture historical monuments and heritage of Pakistan. He has done his photographic work in almost all cities of Punjab, Karcahi, Dera Ismail Khan, Peshawar and Rakni (Baluchistan). Shuaib Raza is associated with many historical, art, photographic and tourists’ forums of Pakistan. His photographs have been appeared in many local and international publications. His many articles have been published in newspapers and magazines. His photographic work has been recognized at various national and international forums.

He is associated with many forums and has been given awards & medals by divisional administration of Dera Ghazi Khan and various other forums for his services in the field of photography, historiography and tourism including Lahore Shanasi Foundation Lahore, Pakistan Heritage Club Islamabad, Cross Route Motorcycles Club Lahore, Wasaib Explorer and Agri Tourism Development Corporation of Pakistan Faisalabad.

Others

His focus of photography is in the areas of Nature, Landscape, History, Antiques, Culture, Heritage, Archaeology and Art. He has arranged various Art & Photographic Exhibitions, Tourism Events and Cultural Programs in different cities. He regularly arranges various photographic walks and rides in various cities. He has assisted many research students of history and archeology in various higher education institutes. Recently he is engaged with bike tourism, having short rides in few cities. He is adventurous and has done photographic work in hard areas, mountains, deserts, rivers and snow. He acknowledges his work to soul of his parents whose life and work motivated him to excel in this field.

Having specialized historiography on non-Muslim heritage in Punjab, he has started compiling his work in book form on historical perspective and heritage of Jhang, Lahore, Dera Ghazi Khan & few other cities, and other related topics.

He has arbitrarily managed a Museum at his home, with a collection Cameras (starting with Kodak camera of 1910), and other antiques. He has collection of stamps, coins, currency notes, archives, visiting cards, match boxes, ball pens/pencils and key rings. His personal library includes a big collection of books on history, art, photography, science, agriculture, literature, traveling and other topics.
